How to Curate a Style That Feels like YOU!

I recently downloaded Substack and the first thing I read was an article about people having identity crises due to following too many trends over time. Honestly, it’s not wrong. Many people decide to follow trends instead of coming up with their own ideas because it’s simply just easier. It’s easier to copy outfits, accessories, jokes, etc. But it’s time for people to start curating their own style. I’m not talking aesthetics. I’m talking what do YOU like to wear. Here I will give you my tips and tricks to curating your own personal style.

1. Get your base, get creative

I used to be one of those people who thought that the only right way to get the perfect outfit was by buying the cuter tops. Which obviously led to buying insane amounts of “going out”  tops just to end up not knowing how to elevate them later on. But my mother recently taught me that I can take one simple top (by simple I mean your usual tank top, flowy top, and t-shirt)  and style it 5 different ways. But how? First get your base, which can be anything you prefer. Whether it’s a top paired with jeans or a dress.

Now get creative. Add some fun layering, if you are wearing a tank top wear a sheer off the shoulder cover up. Pair a top with a funky jacket and a hair scarf. Even an oversized button up over a dress feels funkier.

As such, start accessorizing. Depending on what you want you can either wear chunky jewelry to get that effortless look or simple layered necklaces for a more beachy look. Now there is no limit to this. Wear that scarf. Wear those random hats. This is fashion.

Honestly, people spend way too much time finding tops with the right look but it does not compare to accessorizing which is what creates the outfit. When you go shopping, try to look for add ons rather than specific tops. Like Hats, scarfs, jewelry, belts, neck ties, etc. Clothing wise get “base-like” items like tanks, off the shoulder, crop tops, cute dresses and obviously throw in a going out top too.

2. Be inspired

A daily dose of fashion is necessary to inspire you. Which means scrolling through pinterest or any fashion magazine you enjoy. But the wrong thing to do is take an outfit and try to copy it head to toe. When I would scroll through pinterest I would try to recreate the outfits from the shirt to the same shoes until I realized it didn’t have the same effect. So why take inspiration?

Instead look at those pictures you like and see a specific part that you truly love. Is it the texture of the clothes? Is it the color scheme? Is it the silhouette? There can be so much to an outfit that you don’t truly think about.

Now when you find what you like then you can go ahead and recreate that specific part while adding on with what you think will look best. Which brings me to…

3. Don’t be afraid.

While creating my outfits for my trip to San Francisco I took about 4 hours trying on EVERYTHING. Any combination I could think of was tried on. A part of me saw that as a bad thing due to how tired I was and the mess I was making but with that process I made horrible combinations as well as ones that I knew I would wear for other occasions. The thing with fashion is you have to try everything even if you think it’s going to be ugly! Try those messy patterns together. Try wearing a scarf on your waist. And don’t be afraid to combine different colors. Experimenting is key.

Now that I have given you these tips, the goal I am giving everyone out there who wants to add a little sparkle to their style is to add something extra to their outfit that makes them feel like themselves and makes them feel confident. Anyone and everyone can have great style.

I love you all.

Bye bye
